Welcome to Music!
My name is Brenda Mullin and I will be your child’s music teacher. I have been at St. Benedict School for 11 years. I have a passion for music and have taught it in the past at my previous school. I am very excited to have this role as the music teacher this year and I have some wonderful ideas to share. Movement is a large focus and we are so fortunate to have the gym as an alternate learning space!
Music is a chance for the students to express themselves in a different way. I feel that I am truly blessed because I get to teach EVERY student in the school, not just one grade! We will be having a Christmas celebration once a year that will be held at St. Michaels Church.
Through the elementary music program the students will develop;
- enjoyment of music
- insights into music through meaningful musical activities
- self-expression and creativity
- musical skills and knowledge
- awareness and appreciation of a variety of music including music of the many cultures represented in Canada.
There are many specific learner expectations that will be developed by all the grades. They are interwoven and are developed at different stages. They are broken into three main areas; concepts, skills and attitudes. Concepts are the intellectual framework for the music program and they are divided into five elements: rhythm, melody, harmony, form, and expression. The skills and the concepts of the music program are interrelated. Concepts are essentially taught through the participation in the six skills areas: singing, playing instruments, listening, moving, reading (and writing), and creating. Positive attitudes towards music are fostered by success in singing, playing instruments, listening, moving, reading (and writing) and creating music.
I am looking forward to a wonderful year with your child. If you ever have any questions or concerns please feel free to email me at brenda.mullin@starcatholic.ab.ca
Believe in the power of Music!
